In search of a ticket to state and a serious competition, Silver Lake FFA travelled to Kearney, Nebraska on November 6 for fall CDE’s. The Mustangs spent a great amount of time studying and preparing for this event. Freshmen Samantha Bonifas, Kassi Jones, Brooklyn Meyer, Reagan Rust, and Georgi tenBensel, along with sophomore Katelyn Karr participated in junior livestock judging. Sophomores Tyler Cumpston, Trista Hanson, and Brock Karr teamed up with junior Derek Zubrod to compete in biotechnology. In the junior high division, Taylor Hanson, Lana Swanson, Morgan Dinkler, Sydney Bartels, Maddie Karr, Ashley Bonifas, Keaton Karr, Casey Conway, Cody Plambeck, Clay Plambeck, and Paxton Sorenson competed in livestock judging and a livestock quiz bowl. After a day of waiting, the results were in and the Mustangs were eager to know their placings. In junior livestock judging, Georgi tenBensel came in second place out of 159 contestants. After a successful day of judging, she commented “My favorite part of livestock judging is getting to learn and understand the variety of each species of livestock. I felt pretty confident with those concepts and that carried me on throughout the day.” Following tenBensel were Katelyn Karr, Samantha Bonifas, Reagan Rust, Brooklyn Meyer, and Kassi Jones in places 19th, 34th, 42nd, 54th, and 63rd respectively. This put the team in fourth place. The top four individuals of the top five teams qualify for the state competition, which means that tenBensel, Karr, Bonifas, and Rust will compete at state livestock judging at the Nebraska state FFA convention on April 1-3. The biotechnology team received 11th place. In junior high livestock judging, Lana Swanson placed sixth. Sydney Bartels received 48th place and Taylor Hanson received 53rd. Paxton Sorenson, Keaton Karr, Morgan Dinkler, Ashley Bonifas, Cody Plambeck, and Clay Plambeck followed. Silver Lake FFA looks forward to state livestock judging and their next competition at district leadership development events on January 22. Silver Lake FFA members travelled to Wood River, Nebraska to judge soil characteristics in the South Central Nebraska land judging contest on October 9, 2019. Members competing included Canyon Jameson, Logan Greenough, Derek Zubrod, Trenton Schmidt, Blaine Simonton, Eric Blythe, Samantha Bonifas, Georgi tenBensel, Kassi Jones, Jake Knehans, Braden Karr, Brooklyn Meyer, and Reagan Rust. Land judging is an FFA competition that helps each student learn the importance of soil evaluation. As soil is one of the building blocks of life, it is vital to know information about the soil that surrounds us. Freshman Braden Karr commented, “Land judging taught me just how important conserving quality soil is.” The following links are for FFA points. Dear Junior High Parents, I am excited that your child has chosen to be a member of the Silver Lake FFA Chapter this school year. As FFA members they will have the opportunity to volunteer with activities throughout the year and recieve FFA points. These points will go towards high school FFA activities such as going to State and National FFA Convention, leadership workshops, etc. As our FFA Chapter continues to grow we can only allow so many students to attend. So, being active in junior high can help to reserve a spot for these activities in the future. Your child can also participate in the following events during the school year and recieve FFA points. There will be sign up sheets for these events at our monthly meetings during breakfast: November 6th @ Kearney- Junior High Quiz Bowl (During the school day) November 16th @ Kearney- Pathways to Careers (Saturday) January 22nd @ Aurora- Junior High Speaking Contest (present a speech or be on the parliamentary procedure team) (During the school day) February 28th & 29th @ Kearney- 212/360 Conference (8th graders only) (Friday night and Saturday) Learn more about these events at https://www.education.ne.gov/nce/leadership-conferences/ If your child would like to participate in these events please encourage them to sign up. However, I do expect them to show responsibility and attend the activities that they choose to sign up for. This is extremely important because the Silver Lake FFA Chapter will be paying their cost of the days activities which comes from our fundraising activities. If they cannot attend after they have signed up they will need to find someone to replace them or pay the cost of the workshop out of your own pocket. Also, new this year, we will have a junior high FFA officer team to help with junior high activities and prepare them for a future role as a high school FFA officer. Junior high members that are interested will need to sign up with Mrs. Curlo by September 13th. This year’s 8th graders can apply by February 13th, 2020 at midnight for a high school FFA officer position. The Officer application is found on our FFA website. I would encourage your child to fill out the application well in advance. Their FFA Officer duties would begin in May 2020. Please contact me with any questions throughout the year at 402-756-6611 or at [email protected] Sincerely, Mrs. Curlo 7-12 Agriculture Teacher 7-12 FFA Advisor The Silver Lake FFA Chapter celebrated the upcoming school year by holding a “Back to School Bash” at the Braider Barn on August 16.
